South of Broad is one of Charleston’s most iconic and enchanting neighborhoods—a place where the charm of the South meets the elegance of centuries-old history.  Stroll past grand antebellum mansions, wrought iron gates, and lush secret gardens shaded by ancient live oak trees.  The neighborhood’s pastel-colored homes reflect the city’s rich heritage, offering a picturesque backdrop at every turn.  With stunning views of Charleston Harbor and landmarks like the famous Rainbow Row, this area invites exploration and inspires wonder.

A stunning lineup is in store for you today with gorgeous homes, gardens and club members’ floral displays at each location.  Additionally, we will have members of the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra serenading you in our gardens and plein air artists painting at various homes on the tour.

Plan to walk approximately 2-3 miles this afternoon with a refreshing stop at our hospitality venue for punch and delicious baked goods made locally.  Tours are self-guided with TGCC docents sharing knowledge and history at each location.

Lanyards are required to enter each house/garden and must be picked up before your tour begins.  Early distribution will take place on Thursday, March 18 from 12:00-4:00 pm at The Charleston Museum, 360 Meeting Street.  If you are not arriving in town early, lanyards can be picked up beginning at 12:30 pm on tour days at our hospitality venues; locations will be sent to patrons the week before tours begin.

Frequently Asked Questions about the House & Garden Tour

Can I buy tickets on the day of the tour?
Our tours sell out every year, so be advised that tickets should be purchased in advance.

What is the refund policy?
All sales are final.  Refund requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis until February 15, 2027.  After that date, no refunds will be allowed for any reason, but patrons who notify us in advance can convert tickets to a tax-deductible contribution by contacting us at houseandgardentour@thegardenclubofcharleston.org.

What happens if it rains?
The tours take place even if it is raining, so please check Charleston’s weather forecast to pack appropriately. 

Will I receive my tickets and maps before the tour?
You will need to pick up your lanyards and maps before the tour.  The best time to pick up your tour packet is the day before the tours begin at our early ticket distribution; otherwise, you can pick up your tour packet at the hospitality venues on tour days.  The hospitality venue and address will be sent a week before the tours begin.

• Early distribution:  Thursday, March 18 from 12:00-4:00 pm at The Charleston Museum, 360 Meeting Street
• South of Broad tour:  Friday, March 19 from 12:30-3:30 pm at our hospitality venue
• Harleston Village tour:  Saturday, March 20 from 12:30-3:30 pm at our hospitality venue

Can children come on the tour?
Well-supervised children ages 6 and older are welcome on our tours, but they must have their own ticket.  Strollers, car seats, backpacks, or children strapped to a person in any manner are not permitted in the private residences as there is risk to property, collections and artwork.

Is this tour handicap accessible?
These are private homes, so the tours are not set up to be handicap accessible.

What should I wear?
No high-heeled or kitten-heeled shoes are allowed inside these historic homes.  Please wear comfortable clothing and flat walking shoes as you will be walking a mile or more along the tour route, and Charleston has many streets and alleys with uneven pavement or cobblestone.

Is photography allowed?
No photography is allowed in these private homes and gardens.  We are very grateful to all owners who have invited us to tour their homes and gardens, and we must respect their wishes for privacy.

What can I bring to the tours?
No large bags or backpacks are allowed as they can be hazards in some of the homes.  You would be well advised to bring your own reusable container of water to stay hydrated as you walk from garden to garden as it can be very warm during March.

What are my parking options?
Parking can be a challenge downtown and is extremely limited in residential areas.  Please allow time to park in a nearby public garage and walk.  (See the next question for other transportation options.)  For the latest information on public parking, please visit the city guide.

What are my transportation options for getting around?
Visit the CARTA website for information about the free downtown Charleston Dash shuttle routes that all originate at the Charleston Visitor Center.  The Green Line (Route 211) will be the most helpful shuttle for the South of Broad Tour; the Orange Line (Route 210) will get you to the Harleston Village tour.  Pedicabs are also a great way to get around downtown.  Click here for more information about Charleston Pedicab.

Are restrooms available for the public?
Restrooms are available at our hospitality venues on both days.  On the South of Broad tour, City Hall on the corner of Meeting and Broad has nice public restrooms.  Otherwise, visit the city guide for information on public restrooms downtown.  Your lanyard on both days of the tour will have a QR code to click and access the same guide.  Please note that restroom facilities are often not readily available in Charleston’s historic residential neighborhoods.
