Charleston City Paper and Theatre 99 have teamed up once again to bring laughter and comedic relief to cure the post-holiday blues. January 2019 will mark the 16th annual Charleston Comedy Festival, the premier comedy event of the Southeast.

This year’s event promises to be an even bigger hit than years before with big-name acts—plus more performances, venues, and attendees.

Performers and comedy troupes from the country’s top comedy hotbeds have been invited to perform during the four-day event featuring stand-up, sketch, and improv performers.

Rory Scovel’s new Netflix special Rory Scovel Tries Stand-Up for the First Time recently premiered to rave reviews. He costarred in Amy Schumer’s I FEEL PRETTY and appeared in New Line feature THE HOUSE, alongside Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler, as well as THE LEGACY OF A WHITETAIL DEER HUNTER for director Jody Hill alongside Danny McBride and Josh Brolin. Some of his television credits include the TBS series GROUND FLOOR as well as the NBC series UNDATEABLE, ABC’s MODERN FAMILY, F/X’s THE COMEDIANS and the original series THOSE WHO CANT for TruTV. Rory starred alongside Demetri Martin in Demetri’s directorial debut DEAN which premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, and has an hour- stand up special available on Seeso.

Rory’s stand up has been featured on Comedy Central, CONAN, and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. His second album, RORY SCOVEL LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS, was released in 2013 and was recorded live at their studios in Nashville.

Whether discussing drugs, politics, or life in general his infectious stage presence and engaging charisma will quickly shift the vibe of any room and place the audience in the scene of every punch line.

Have you ever pondered the idea that Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham might be racially charged? And just whose uncle IS Uncle Ben? Well, maybe it’s time to take a closer look. Using comedic sketches, improv, and character pieces, this one-manshow from the mind of Dad’s Garage’s own Mark Kendall examines the representation of black males in the media. From prison to white flight, Aunt Jemima, and even Reading Rainbow – we’ll explore some of the ways these images influence our views on race in everyday life. Word to your mother. But not the n-word.

WORKING TITLE (AMBER NASH & KEVIN GILLESE)
Working Title is a two person long form improv show featuring Amber Nash and her adorable sidekick (AKA husband) Kevin Gillese as they create a screenplay based off of audience suggestions in about 60 minutes. Gillese always plays the main character which leaves Nash playing every other character in the story, part of the joy is watching this virtuoso improv comedian bouncing around seamlessly from character to character. This show was originally inspired by the screenwriting manual "Save The Cat" and has toured across Europe and the United States. The most recent touring engagements include Portland, OR, the Amsterdam Improv Festival and Cincinatti Improv Festival.

Kids These Days is a sketch comedy group formed by comedians at The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, & The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Performers are regulars at UCB (Harold & Maude Night), the PIT, & the Magnet Theater. Kids These Days is appearing as a featured act at the upcoming 2019 SF Sketchfest. The group headlined NY SketchFest and was a featured act at 2018 NY Comedy Fest, HBO/The Television Academy's 2018 Independent Television Festival, & the 2018 Out of Bounds Comedy Festival in Austin, TX. They were named a Critics' Pick and profiled by the Austin Chronicle. "Kids These Days: A Sketch Comedy Show!" is a recurring monthly mainstage show at the People's Improv Theater, and every show has been sold out. Actor, producer, and comedian Jamie Kennedy just wrapped James Gray’s sci-fi epic Ad Astra, opposite Brad Pitt. His other recent work includes starring roles in the latest installment of the Tremors film franchise for Universal, as well as Riley’s Peak with Jon Voight, and the thriller, Spinning Man, opposite Guy Pearce and Pierce Brosnan. Prior, he appeared in Chris Carter’s (The X-files) Amazon drama pilot The After, and NBC’s medical dramedy, Heartbeat. He is also voicing multiple characters on the new Comedy Central animated series, Legends Of Chamberlain Heights, and portrayed legendary music manager Jerry Heller in the Lifetime movie Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge, & Michel’le. Jamie can also be seen performing his stand up show around the country. Jamie landed his big break when he was cast in Baz Luhrman’s Romeo + Juliet, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio as a punked-out rival to John Leguizamo. His career soon kicked into high gear as he co-starred in his breakthrough performance as Randy Meeks in Wes Craven’s Scream and its follow-up Scream 2. NAMELESS NUMBERHEAD
Nameless Numberhead is an off the wall comedy show from the charmingly demented minds of married couple Maari Suorsa and Henry Riggs. The duo explores human absurdities in the age of algorithms through over the top characters, dynamic physicality, original music, and a splash of surrealism. They have performed at festivals and colleges all over the country and have been featured on FunnyorDie, TedX, and the SF Sketchfest. Charm City Comedy Project calls Nameless Numberhead "one of the most compelling sketch shows we've ever hosted". And with over 400 years of experience, Nameless Numberhead has mastered the art of hyperbole.

ALCHEMY COMEDY THEATER TOURCO
The team from Alchemy Comedy Theater in Greenville likes to start out slow. Beginning with a story based on suggestions from the audience, the veteran touring ensemble crafts a back-andforth dialogue between two characters. As that conversation begins to change and develop, the group takes those ideas and then expands upon them until the performance erupts into a fastpaced production.

MYSTERY MEAT
The dynamic duo of BLKPAPA (part-time rapper) and White Smoke (the world's greatest Spotify user) are prepared to bring you a healthy helping of hip-hop sketch comedy. It's a mystery what these two are grilling up, but this tasty half rap concert, half sketch comedy show is guaranteed to bring the hype. Come hungry. Leave satisfied.

Jamie Lee is an actress, author and stand-up comedian, currently starring as the female lead in Season 2 of HBO's "Crashing." She formerly wrote on Season 1 of the show as well as "Teachers," "Talk Show: The Game Show" and more. She was a core cast member on the hit MTV series "Girl Code" and was the host of TruTV's "10 Things." As a stand up, she has appeared on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" and "Conan" and, in 2016, Lee released her debut book "Weddiculous" with Harper Collins. Her new stand up album "I Mean..." was released on January 19th to glowing reviews.

Charleston Stand-up Comedy Showcase brings you a smorgasbord from Charleston's local stand-up comedy scene.  This all-star lineup will have you laughing from start to finish with ten very funny, and very different comedians bringing you their best "tight six" minute sets.  They've toured all over the nation, but they call Charleston their home and they perform and produce shows all over the city.    Buckle up!  Your host, Keith "Big Daddy" Dee promises this is going to be a great ride.

Joseph Coker 
Joseph is a writer and comic based in North Charleston, SC. He has opened for the head writers of Tosh.0, regularly tours the South East, and most recently was a returning feature act in the New South Comedy Festival. His debut book Pillar of Salt is available on Kindle.

Bill Davis
Bill is a comedian who lives in Charleston, South Carolina where he writes and performs comedy for the stage and screen and hopefully, one day, for money.

Heath Richardson
Heath is a Charleston-based comedian who has been popping up all over the country doing stand-up comedy.  Locally he's performed at the Eclectic, Elliotborough Minibar, Pounce Cat Cafe, the Tin Roof, Sportsbook, Local 616, the Brick, Cutty's, and Creekside Comedy Night, amongst others. He also regularly hosts the weekly open-mic at the Sparrow in Park Circle.

Tanner Riley
Tanner was a recent finalist in the Soda City Showdown stand-up competition, and was a participant in the second annual Cola Comedy Con. He can be seen doing stand-up comedy all over Charleston. Originally from Ohio, Tanner is an avid sports fan and takes full advantage of the invention of air conditioning.

Hagan Chase Ragland
Hagan Ragland is a five year veteran of the Charleston Comedy Scene.  Wearing one of his trademark Hawaiian shirts, you can find him stirring up laughter tackling subjects such as having a Japanese Grandmother and what not to do while drinking.  Hagan was 2nd place in the 2016 Charleston Comedy Festival Standup competition.  His podcast, "The Petty Couch" was nominated for Charleston City paper's Best Podcast of 2017.  

Joshua Bates
Josh Bates is a Colorado native and retired military veteran, who has been doing standup all over the Lowcountry, opening for others like Def Jam’s Tony Tone. He also hosts a Charleston show, “Is This Art?” when he’s not in the bathroom reading the backs of shampoo bottles.

Deshawn Mason
Deshawn is known to have a stage presence somewhere between a nice looking rock and a Supernova. Having performed for over five years, he's taken the time hone his performance style. He's performed in the Charleston Comedy Festival opening up for Todd Barry, Columbia Comedy Festival featuring for Myq Kaplan, and the Highlarious Comedy Festival in Seattle. Along with stand-up he finds his time acting, doing sketch comedy, and a little bit of Improv.

Jon Antoine
Jon is a stand-up comedian, comedic actor and podcaster.  Antoine is half of the sketch comedy duo Vernon Moses along with comedian Deshawn Mason. Antoine is also one half of the podcast The Petty Couch along with his roommate and fellow comedian Hagan Chase Ragland. The Petty Couch was recently featured in Charleston City Paper's article on homegrown podcasts.

Shawna Jarrett
Shawna is the lead comic on the Charleston Comedy Bus, writes and produces sketch comedy, and hosts the monthly Get Up! Comedy Night at Tin Roof. She's nominated for 2018 Best Local Comic in the Charleston City Paper's Best of Charleston awards and is featured in shows across the Southeast. Her material includes topics like gender and sexuality, businesses housed in former Pizza Huts, Venn diagrams, and her home turf of West Ashley.

Rossi Brown
Rossi was born and raised in Charleston. Rossi's stage presence can be described as a charismatic specialist, with the undertone of a wise old man / best friend. Rossi has opened for Last Comic Standing alumni; Daniel Tirando and Drew Thomas, who both described Rossi as a "funny comic." He has also opened for the Toronto Laughing Skull Comedy Competition 2015 winner Rob Haze.

Keith Dee - Host
Keith Big Daddy Dee hosts and produces Creekside Comedy Night. As a comedian he has performed all over the US. As a host he has produced many shows all over the Lowcountry.

At Tales from the Campfire, The Pushers take your deepest fears and turn them into a series of gut-busting ghost stories right before your eyes. Get ready for a frightful night of comedy (or is it a hilarious night of frights). I ain't afraid of no ghosts!!! The Pushers are Virginia’s premiere comedy group. For more than 13 years they’ve had audiences howling with laughter. The group is known for their racy, high-octane show that’s utterly unpredictable. If you’ve never seen a Pushers’ show… you’re in for a wild ride.

TRAINING FOR PROM (Baltimore) Training for Prom performs longform improv that’s at once familiar and bizarre. This puckish troupe combines whimsy with emotional connection to bring you along for a ride that flips reality through the looking glass. They have performed in the Charm City Fringe Festival, Providence Improv Fest, Big Pond Improv Fest, Pittsburgh Comedy Festival, and the New York City Improv Festival, as well as the Baltimore Improv Festival.
